IORY 3525
Title:  IORY 3525
Description:  I had been crossing my fingers before making this trip that somehow we would manage to stumble across the CIND first shift job coming back from Greensburg. This train had pretty regularly been running out to Greensburg on Mondays, but very early in the morning. I happened to look on Facebook when we were done with the IERR, and sure enough, they were on their way back reported in New Point just after noon. Knowing we had enough time to get over there, we took a quick bathroom break and headed for the concrete bridge over Bonnell Road and the Whitewater River west of Guilford, IN. The train took much longer to arrive to our local than either one of us had expected, which we later figured out was due to crossing malfunctions in Batesville. But, the wait was worth it!

CSX 4050
Title:  CSX 4050
Description:  My dad took some interest in following the Indiana Eastern a few weeks back, so I decided to make a Monday on the IERR happen for the both of us. We ended up getting a little bit later of a start than I had hoped, and with the IERR getting an earlier start to their day now than what they did compared to the first time I had chased them south four years ago, I was a bit worried that we wouldnt catch them departing. However, we were both relieved to find that they had yet to go grab their interchange cars from CSX. Speaking of CSX, that was the railroad that was active upon arrival. L425 was departing Connersville eastbound, while M360 was waiting for their arrival at McGoingle. Ever since the L421/425 were reinstated to originating at Connersville, a plethora of different CSX motors have come and gone from the pool, ranging from Geeps to GEVOs. So, we werent really sure what todays L425 was going to throw at us. About a half hour after we got settled in Cottage Grove, L425 came rushing by with a SD40-3/GEVO/Dash 9 trio with a 318 axle local bound for Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati.

Title:  IERR 5255
Description:  There wasnt much for the IERR to do in the yard today, as their whole train for Fernald and the transload on the south side of Cottage Grove was all in one track. We hopped over to Stone Road to grab them pulling out of the yard and shoving back to their own rails.

CSX 4534
Title:  CSX 4534
Description:  The IERR worked the transload for much longer than either of us had expected, which allowed M360 to continue from McGoingle and head west. Once we heard it trip the detect about three miles away and the IERR was still working, we decided to take a gamble and head out to 9 Mile Road west of College Corner. The gamble paid off, despite us almost nearly not making it, as M360 was a pair of SD70MACs. Unfortunately, it began to rain, which made the train very backlit. But, we still nabbed some nice frames of the train coming by a small farmstead.

CSX 9969
Title:  CSX 9969
Description:  We made it back to the IERR and the crew was still working the transload, so we assumed we were all good. We sat there for about 5 minutes, then heard CSX W003 call MP 42 with the CSX 9969 leading. Immediately knowing that was the Geometry Train, we decided to take a gamble again, as this was something we really couldnt pass up. This time, we decided on Stone Road in Cottage Grove, as we assumed the train would be moving pretty quickly despite running negative signals behind M360. We were wrong, and the IERR took off while we waited. Oh well, this one was too good to pass up. CSX definitely gave us an interesting morning here!

Description:  The race south was on! We wanted to at least beat it to the Okeana High Bridge, but. we caught eye of the train between Bath and Peoria. There was a specific shot I wanted between the two towns, but it would have to wait for another day. We set up shop in Peoria and began our chase from there.

CSX 2028
Title:  CSX 2028
Description:  We decided from here we were going to head into Cincinnati to see what we could find on the mainlines. US 50 closely parallels both the CIND and the CSX Indiana Subdivision from North Bend all the way into the city. We came across CSX L427 finishing up their work at Consolidated Grain and Barge just outside of the city with a pair of geeps. Its been a goal of mine to try to get an eastbound CSX train in this spot. Another big capture for the day!

IORY 4086
Title:  IORY 4086
Description:  There was a small spark of hope in my mind that we would stumble across the CIND Honda Job at Idaho Street. Sure enough, we did. And not only that, but with a new crew that was just getting on. This job has been running nights for quite a while now, which was why catching the local coming from Greensburg was so important. When we were down here last month, we found the rack train with a crew, but it unfortunately didnt run until after dark. Things were looking up to catching it in all the places we missed then!

IORY 4086
Title:  IORY 4086
Description:  Sure enough, after doubling and picking up the conductor, the CIND rack train took off westbound. So, we were headed back to Cleves to grab the shot over the Miami River which was the big shot that we missed out on a month ago. But, since the trains move relatively slow between Idaho Street and there, we looked for a few places to shoot the train between. Unfortunately, the tracks so closely parallel US 50, we werent able to find a lot of places to just pull off and grab a shot. We were going to grab a shot of it passing the CG&B elevator where we shot the CSX local, but the clearance there was too close. So, we opted for a shot of them passing Growmark a little further down the road.

MALX 4444
Title:  MALX 4444
Description:  At North Bend, the CIND and CSX split and gain a little bit of distance from US 50, and there is also another CG&B plant. The one at the North Bend location uses a high hood GP9 to shuttle cars. Unfortunately, they were not working when we parked here, but that may have actually been in our favor. If they were working we probably would not have been able to sit here.

IORY 4086
Title:  IORY 4086
Description:  The CIND rack train enters Valley Junction Yard Limits as the train crosses over the Miami River on the big steel bridge at Hooven. To get two different trains over both steel bridges in one day is a MAJOR accomplishment. We were especially happy to get this shot after we had missed out on it a month prior. This day could not have gotten any better than this, right?

IORY 4490
Title:  IORY 4490
Description:  Well, we were about to find out. We ran over to the other end of Valley to see if the rack train would continue on. They stopped by the yard office, we assume to grab some paperwork. While we were about ready to continue east toward Cincinnati again, we noticed that the 2nd shift CIND Local Job must have gone OD, as the geep was gone again. With the Greensburg run done for the day, and knowing that they usually worked North Bend and Addyston on second shift, but with the rack train in their way it would be impossible to go east, we decided to take a major gamble and see if they were up at West Harrison at Seimer Mills. This is the last active stretch of the original IORY between Brookville and Valley Junction. and I had been trying to catch a train on this section of track for as long as I can remember. While heading up to Harrison, we noticed that there was a Kilby stone train parked at Melvin Stone with a pair of patched Dash 9s. Would have been pretty awesome to see this move too, but it was clear that it probably wouldnt be for a few days at least.

IORY 3525
Title:  IORY 3525
Description:  Our gambling paid off. Majorly. Sure enough, the second shift CIND job was up working Seimer Mills. We honestly could not believe our eyes, but given how today had gone so far, it should not have been a surprise! This line in particular has always been of interest to me, given its true branch line feel following the Whitewater River. Some buildings along the tracks are mere feet from the rails! Due to a major washout in 2013(?), IORY opted to abandon the line north of West Harrison as the cost of rebuilding was too much, despite the glass factory in Brookville being such a large customer. Since then, sand is still delivered by rail, but it is transloaded from rail ro road from Camden to Brookville from Norfolk Southern. Most of the rail remains in place though, so. if traffic volumes increase, there is no saying that it wont be rebuilt. But, it isnt looking likely. Despite that, we at least still have this small section of the Brookville Sub left! We set up shop at Broadway Street and about 15 minutes later IORY L272, as the crew was calling themselves, called departin Seimer Mills. Look how close that building is to the rails! There were several locations along this branch line like this. But, the only place to see something like this with a train still running is here in West Harrison.

Title:  IORY 3525
Description:  By the time L272 made it back, the CIND rack train was gone, which gave them a route into the yard. After throwing the switch lining the Brookville Branch to the main, the train headed into the yard. We grabbed a final shot of the train passing the CIND yard sign. This truly was the cherry on top. I have been trying to catch a train on this section of track for so long, and can finally say that I have. Definitely a wild day for Dad and I! We had an eastbound on CSX coming, but we decided to opt out on it and end on a high note. After grabbing some supper at Freddys in Harrison, we made the 3 hour drive back toward home. Definitely will be one of the best railfanning days of the year by far!
